Who is CPR’s best striker?

Below is a comparison of a the past few seasons of goalscoring statistics for CPR’s recognised netbusters, including an aggregated total for those years.  The two most pertinent stats are the Goals per Game Ratio and the Percentage of Games Scored in. The latter of these accounts for those, shall we say, easier games, where perhaps only half the opposition turn up and one man scores 6 goals himself. (So for example, if A scores 10 goals in one game and then 0 for the remaining 15, and B scores a total of 9 goals, each a single goal in 9 games of a 12 game season – A will take the golden boot, but is arguably of less use to the team than B.)

And as Scotty would say, friendlies don’t count.

So, what do we learn from this?

Well, unsurprisingly for some perhaps, Terry was the stand out striker of last season, averaging a goal every 76 minutes. And to strengthen his claim, his goals were not concentrated in one or two games, with his go-go-gadget limbs finding the net around 53% of the time he stepped out in a CPR shirt. And what of actual Golden Boot winner Stuart? His goals per game ratio is not far behind Terry and is just ahead of his boozy, soon-to-be-ex-flatmate. But perhaps most upsettingly, last season if you’d bet on Stu to get on the scoresheet, there was only a 31% chance he would have won you some spondoolies. Your hard-earned would have been much safer with Walshy, Terry or Gav. Golden Boot? AFC Ealing – take a bow.

However, this was clearly the exception rather than the rule, with the wee man streaking ahead in 07/08 (bar Gav’s perfect solo appearance), but perhaps Saif and Terry can point to their playing more in the midfield during this season. Still his stats are pretty impressive.

Not including his debut season in 05/06 as a centre back, Walshy is rather upsettingly proving himself to be a useful target man, notching more than a goal every other game across the past two seasons. Maybe that big head is actually useful. Although, were we to be able to calculate number of headed goals in relation to physical height, Saif would surely be laughing in Walshy’s face right now. As we all would like to. However, we can of course seek great comfort in the fact that of all those mentioned here today, Chris Walsh is the only one to have scored an own goal.

The less said about Saif’s 06/07 stats the better.

The stats for 04/05 are mightily impressive for both Wills and Stuart, but CPR was playing in the league below, so the goals were perhaps easier to come by back then (Simon Evans bagged 5 that year……).

Overall, Rich Wills appears to be on a par with Stuart, with only a few fleeting appearances in recent seasons keeping his total down. But his prolific start to the current season suggests that the old pair of Adidas boots could be off to Reading rather than Glasgow come May.

At the very least, there’s plenty for the front men to be thinking about going into the next few games.

(Stu’s pre 04/05 stats will hopefully be up in due course as we count down towards his 100th goal. As of writing there are 17 to go.)
