CPR 2, AFC Mayfair 6
Regents Park, 30 Sep 2000

Another mauling. I’ll try to keep the report brief, to save me spiralling into a fit of depression.

Samy’s final game, and CPR got off to a disastrous start by losing two soft goals in the first 10 minutes. Although CPR looked reasonably good in keeping possession, Mayfair were finding holes down the flanks every time they broke forward, and their height advantage meant that they looked dangerous when the crosses came over.

CPR were making chances at the other end, however, and eventually the pressure paid off when Jon M knocked the ball home in a goalmouth scramble following a corner.

CPR were 2-1 down at the break, and it was obvious that the next goal would be absolutely crucial. CPR enjoyed a lot of the ball without really looking like scoring, and then Mayfair got the killer goal: they won a corner, and when the cross came in one of their midfielders was standing by himself on the 6-yard line. He nodded home under no pressure whatsoever.

With that, the CPR heads went down and for a 10-minute spell the team lost all discipline. A CPR throw-in was given straight to an AFC striker 20 yards from goal: he sped off instantly, catching the CPR defence out of shape, and the AFC winger rattled home a shot into the bottom corner of the net.

A couple of minutes later CPR gave away a needless free-kick on the halfway line, and when the ball was lofted into the CPR penalty box AFC’s blond midfielder found himself completely alone. He had time to bring the ball down, turn and hit a shot which John managed to save at point-blank range, but the rebound was slotted away.

To round off the day, AFC finished off with a cracking midfield strike from 30 yards – at this point they could not hit a bad ball.

Towards the end of the game Mayfair started to get a bit reckless, pushing their defenders upfield in the hope of sticking another one past the hapless CPR. However, CPR did manage a final consolation goal when Samy caught Mayfair on the break by slipping it down the right wing to Matt, who knocked it past the keeper.

Summary: yet again, another game lost by giving away a load of really soft goals, particularly at set-pieces. Playing this way, we hardly even give ourselves a chance.

Final score: CPR 2, AFC Mayfair 6
